Chapter 71 in the exclusive series for Dynamic Commodities- becoming a commodities trader

Marty not only liked the idea of putting me in charge of the precious metals business in London, he loved it. He had run the sugar business from London before he was summed back by Gutfreund to run Philipp Brothers. He started telling me how much my wife and I would love living there. He told me all about the amazing ex-pat package I would get and how much money I would save and be paid to take on this assignment. The job was mine and I was on top of the world as I sat on the leather couch in Marty’s office with Henry and Chris fawning all over me. Then they asked the question that made my jaw drop, Henry said, “Can you be there first thing Monday morning full time?”

I had a wife and a six month old baby, our first son. I knew that convincing my better half to move to London was a stretch, but convincing her to move immediately was a nightmare. I also knew I would be walking into a lion’s den. I was friendly with all of the traders in London, but I was young, younger than all of them at 28 years old. It would take a lot of work to become their boss and gain respect. Then there was the manager. Chris, Marty and Henry did not want to fire him; they thought he would quit saving them the severance pay which after his many years with the firm would be significant. My mind swirled as I though what have I gotten myself into here. My bright idea is going to put me on the hot seat with my wife and all of my colleagues around the world. However, I knew that once the cat is out of the bag there is no turning back. Without the blink of an eye I answered Henry’s question, “No problem, I’m ready.” Marty smiled at me and said, “That is why I love this guy.” I then told them that I better go home and tell my wife because she has no idea. Marty offered to call her but thinking back to how that went with Sid when I began to travel, I declined and said I will take care of it, thanks.

I walked out of the office with a skip in my step but there was so much to take care of in such a short time. I have to work out all of the details of compensation; moving and most importantly I had to tell my wife. I was excited and nervous at the same time and when it came to going home that afternoon I have to admit, I was a little scared about the reaction. I needed another strategy and fast.
